What was it?
What was it in her voice?
When she sang that sad song
What was it in her choice?
What was it in her choice?
That will last forever long
What was it in how she stayed?
When she wanted to go away
What was it in how she played?
With all her heart that made her stray
What was it in her eyes?
Hidden by unfallen tears
What was it in her lies?
That showed her gruesome fears
What was it in how she walked?
That made her trip and fall
What was it in how she talked?
Her slow, hopeless drawl
What was it in her mind?
That said it was the end
What was it in her lost find?
That left her without a friend
What was it in her part?
That made her forget to act
What was it in her heart?
That was broken and cracked
What was it that was lost?
Between now and then
Between now and then
What was it? What was the cost?
Never to be paid again
What was it? What was it?
That pushed her to render
Her own life, and to submit
To the evil Contender
What was it? What was it?
That I could have done
Me, with a standard unfit.
Was it I who made her run?
What was it? What was it?
I wrote this a year ago about a friend who tried to commit suicide. For months after the incident, I wondered how someone could bring themselves to murder a life... their own. I thought back on all our old talks and connected the dots. She lived in an extremely abusive home and relationship. Every day, she was faced with hatred directed towards her. I thought about the time I had taken to be her friend, and realized that I was too quick to judge her.
Because of the problems she faced, she became secluded. She dyed her hair black, wore dark clothing, and was the stereotypical "goth". I didn't like the person she was becoming, so I drew myself away. I couldn't see the brokenness in her, but God did.
After the incident, my eyes were opened to the real problem: my view on the world. I had been too quick to judge anything and everything that didn't seem "Christian". So take this lesson with you: everyone needs love, not just the ones who look the part, and it's our job to show and give them God's love.
