Divine Jealousy

“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.”

Song of Solomon 8:6

We love to complicate simple truths; we like to create manuals out of raw doctrines. We elaborate on things which we know nothing about. It seems we are eager to explain the bio-chemical workings of created man, while we are less inclined to describe the Creator of man. There are many claims of conquering nations, kingdoms, and stars, but there are only a few claims that demonstrate dominion over self. We build and build, but we know little about the material we are using for construction. It is clear that we love to complicate simple truths.

We have given birth to angelology, soteriology, anthropology, and theology; we have taken Jesus’ parables and clothed ourselves in His red-words. We form denominations around personal, pet doctrines and preferences. We communicate our intentions and ignore the Lord’s. We listen to our voices, assert the cacophony in the name of Truth, and tend to forget the importance of listening to Heaven’s heartbeat. Life gets busy and chaotic – then realize it has passed us by. We commit ourselves to a relationship with ideas, and we forget about our simple intimate relationship with Christ. We simply forget, while Christ simply remains jealous for us.

But let us not forget the significance of the simple. Let us not forget the beauty of love and grace. Let us not forget where we started – with the love of Jesus – in a relationship. Let us not hide our eyes or ears from thing that matters most – the revealed whisper of the Savior saying, “I love you.”
